So I'm heading back to Uni tomorrow, and I am pretty excited!  

The Summer Holidays have been doing my head in and I don't think I could stand another week of not doing anything; I would have been Paperpoké-ing, but as you know I ran out of glue.  I tried four other brands, but I found none of them satisfactory.  And I think managed to purchase 10 bottles of glue from Amazon (forever indebted to ~P-M-F) but they won't arrive until next  month.  So, I have been staring at all these printed templates and have not been able to do anything with them - frustrating much!

I have made a Marrowak and Cubone, but they need some editing still, and i have been making some non-Paperpoké models, like another Weighted Companion Cube and a giant papercraft diamond ring in a papercraft ring-box.  But with these non-Power Pritt Gel glues, they are not anywhere near as good as the glue I normally use.  Once again, I cannot reiterate how crutial a good glue is, and now that Henkel have stopped making mine, I don't know what I'll do when I run out of it ... when it comes.  I guess I'll have to find another hobby, or get a full-time job, lol!

I think that my time at Paperpokés is coming to an end anyways; I've been around since we founded it in 2008 and without Paperbuff it just hasn't been the same.  We've had a recent infusion of new blood and I find myself being less and less necessary.  It's been fun, with lots of ups and a few downs.  And I've made some amazing friends (whom I still would love to meet in real life), and connected with some great people that I would probably have never met had I not been such a Nintendo-phile in the begining.  

I'll probably do two maybe three more Paperpoké models and then I think it'll be time to say "adieu".  Perhaps, if I have any time, maybe I could do an occasional model during a Uni holidays, but there are no promises.  However, before I do go into "retirement", I think I'll make some special models to thank you guys for being so kind to me: Glaceon, Sableye, and hopefully the perfect Gengar - that would be nice   

With full-time study and kids, it's just too hard to commit myself like I use to.  I'll hopefully get industry-placement by the end of the year, so there definitely won't be any time left left to sit, cut and get sticky fingers.  I'll still submit stuff I make in Uni, here (once they've been assessed), so it's not really "goodbye", just "see you around sometime".

They've stopped selling my glue!!! It was a real "OH SHI..." moment for me when I found this out, I cannot find it anywhere.  And the glue that Henkel have replaced it with is CRAP!!! I am sooooooo upset right now.  I've always said that your papercraft is only as good as your tools, and if the glue is bollocks, then so is your craft.  

If anyone out there knows where I can get some Power Pritt Gel, PLEASE, help me!

So I get asked this question quite a bit, and I thought, rather than repeating myself over and over, I should just make it a resource in my journal.  So here it is:

The trick is to buy large sheets of coloured card - you know the stuff that you get for school projects.  You can choose pretty much any colour, except for primary red, orange, primary yellow, and every other hue that falls between these colours.  For some reason, this range of the colour spectrum is not complimentary to any photography subject.  The only exception would be dark, muted range of red-orange-yellow, e.g.: burgundy and browns.  However, I do recommend white (of course), purples, blues, and greens.

So now that you've bought your large and beautiful coloured sheets of card, you are going to make what is called a seamless (zero/no/endless) horizon background.  This is where you softly bend the card between a vertical surface and a horizontal surface, e.g.: the wall and a table.  You will have to weight/stick the card down to ensure the sheet doesn't move/slip.  And make sure the room has a lot of natural light - never use a flash if possible.

Set up your model and photograph it using a tripod if you can - the steadier the camera, the less blurry your photo will be.  Photograph your subject from as many angles as possible - I use a clock-face configuration: 00:00, 01:30, 03:00, 04:30, 06:00, 07:30, 09:00, and 10:30.  The reason for this is so that you have plenty of options to play with and you don't need to shoot the subject again from the desired angle in what may possibly be a different lighting environment (i.e.: "Oh darn! It got cloudy." *sad face*).  Then I take an additional photo of the subject off-center and use this shot as the base photo for my composites seen on Paperpokés.

The reason behind using the seamless coloured card background is so you don't need to edit out and replace the real background (e.g.: your window, bedroom wall, or shelf) with a fake one in Adobe Photoshop.  This process only ends up looking like your subject is oddly floating in space, surrounded by a harsh, and often inaccurate, weird looking edge.  

You may, sometimes, need to alter the lighting levels in a photo editing program, and I like to add a little flourish using Photoshop brushes on the background of the base photo.  To do this you use the Magic Wand or quick selection tool to "mask" off the subject from the background.  Then add a new layer and experiment with pretty/relevant brushes to enhance the background of the image.  I also like to add a frame on the edges of the photos to finish them off, then compose the small insert photos onto the base photo, and "Voila!" You have a Paperpokés style image.

So I finished uni for the year, and I am knackered!  I just want to sleep and sleep and watch some TV (because I haven't seen any in 6 months).  I'm really glad I did this course this year - I've produced so much in such a short period of time - and I had an awesome folio to take to my interview for the advance Graphic Design course that I applied for.  I got my A-letter in the mail yesterday and so I can thoroughly relax now.

I'll finish submitting some more of my uni work sometime this week and then ... who knows?  *yawn*  I'll see if I can get back into the Paperpokés swing, but there's no guarantee that I can be re-motiva ... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Back in 5 Minutes ... well, actually, more likely several months.  

I'm heading back to University tomorrow, and it's been a long time since I was at school.  It's scary and exciting all at the same time!  If you are curious, I'll be studying Graphic Design.  This will be my third career change - I previously was in Microbiology, and before that I studied Architecture, but hated it!

I don't expect I'll have a lot of time to be building any Paperpoké models for a while.  I'll probably be able to squeeze in one or two during school holidays, if they don't give out too much homework, but who knows.  Don't worry, the rest of the team have everything under control and regular readers of Paperpokés won't even know that I'm missing in action.  

I am presently building my last Paperpoké model at the moment, but it's nothing new.  I have a huge folder of "to-do" models, ones that other testbuilders have built, but ones that I always wanted to do too.  Included in this folder are models such as Duskull and Ladyba.  I decided to build Haunter on the last civilian day I'll have in a while.  I'll post it as soon as I can.

I often get asked "How did I make ________ (insert Paperpoké model)?".  I would have to say that it is pretty much practice and patience.  I've been papercrafting for about 5 years, now - more so in the last 12 months than at any other point in time. And I really believe that you learn from making mistakes.  

I often rebuild models 2-3 times, just so the are just right for publishing on our website.  It's relatively easy to make a template from a model, but it's not so easy to make a good template that others can follow with ease, and that doesn't waste too much paper.

But making a good model is not simply about the work that papercrafter designers do, you also need the correct tools to create a good papercraft.  This is a fact that is often overlooked, but is actually crucial.  You really only need a few things to get great results:


1. Use decent paper - (NOT regular 80gsm printer paper) find some that is about 120gsm in weight

2. A good pair of sharp scissors
eg: Honey Bee non-stick precision Scissors [link]

3. An used-up ball point pen or craft stylus to score fold lines with
eg: Pergamano small ball stylus [link]

4. A little metal ruler - metal doesn't get damaged or dinted like plastic.

5. Decent acid-free paper glue - importantly it needs to be fast setting
eg: Power Pritt Multipurpose Extra Strong Gel [link] or Aleene's Original Tacky Glue [link]

6. Tweezers - preferably non-stick

7. A tooth-pick (wooden cuticle stick) for getting into those hard to reach places

8. A scalpel which has replaceable blades

Pro-tip:

1. Score/emboss the fold lines of the template piece before you cut it out of the card stock. Otherwise you'll end up trying to keep fiddly pieces of paper still with one hand while trying to score/emboss with the other - it never end well.
